Please do NOT throw the scat: Wild Adventure Program

The howler monkeys are here! The howler monkeys are here! Get one for the house and you can throw all the alarm clocks away, that’s for sure. But we’re not here to talk about howler monkeys. We’re not even here to talk about the raucous parrots that used to live outside my window and wake me up at the butt crack of dawn with an atonal, aimless song about nothing.

What we are here to talk about is the Wild Adventure Program for kids at the Elmwood Park Zoo Saturday, October 11, 2008, beginning at 11 AM. This educational event aims at teaching youngsters (and interested adults) how to recognize wildlife by the signs they leave behind, primarily tracks and scat.

What can you learn from scat? I learned you should never run a search on the term ‘scat’ by itself unless you’re ready to dive into a whole ‘nother world of experimentation. However, a search for ‘ANIMAL scat’ should be safe. Scat is the term for animal poop and you can learn a lot from it. Daniel Boone did. Davy Crockett too.

Explore the world of animal tracking at the Elmwood Park Zoo to discover all the other clues they leave behind if you know what to look for. You can even make a set of tracks to take home with you. The zoo is located at 1661 Harding Boulevard, Norristown, PA.

And, kids, if you really want to cause your parents a load of unrelenting stress, did you know that you can rent the entire zoo from 6-9 PM for the low, low price of $2,000? Just ask them enough times. They’ll give in eventually. It’d be a heck of a birthday party…
