With some performances it’s inevitable you’ll laugh ‘til you soil yourself and have to be revived in the hospital. Anyone seen A Mighty Wind? So it is with The Philly Improv Theater and their presentation of The Hoppers Hit the Road at Philly Fringe. Is it brilliant or is it funny? Is it slightly more brilliant than funny or a tad more funny than brilliant? Is it a floor wax and a dessert topping? Maybe its both.
Who cares? Stop asking me questions. You’re making me crazy.
The important thing is this – The Hoppers Hit the Road is a musical comedy conceived, incubated, and hatched by the most riotously funny people Philadelphia has to offer, except maybe that crossing guard lady at 16th and Market Street. I don’t think she had anything to do with the production because she was busy that day.
But everyone else pitched in, loaning their sense of humor and creativity for the cause. It’s a veritable Who’s Who of Philly improv talent. Produced by some of the top improv troupes in the city like Greg Maughan (Philly Improv Theater), Matt Nelson (Philadelphia Improv Festival), and the Executive Director of the N Crowd, this performance stars members of The N Crowd, The Rare Bird show, Men about Town, Illegal Refill, ComedySportz, Delaware TheatreSports, and the Sixth Borough.
So what the heck is The Hoppers Hit the Road about anyway? Does it even matter? With this kind of talent behind the production, it could be a silent ode to salmonella poisoning and the audience would be rolling in the aisles. Actually, the story concerns two home-schooled brothers who leave the safety of their small town roots and journey to Philadelphia in search of their first gig.
Catch it live at the Adrienne Mainstage tomorrow, Thursday, September 4, 2008, at 8:30 pm. In case you’re opposed to random wandering, the Adrienne is located at 2030 Sansom Street. Read more about the production on The Hoppers Hit the Road here.
You really should check out that crossing guard lady too. She’s good.
