Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help South West Center City energize the populace with the 1st Annual Rock ‘N Run held Saturday, October 11, 2008, at 9 AM at the Julian Abele Park. First off, where the heck is South West Center City? Get out your map kiddies – it’s the Philadelphia neighborhood bounded by South Street, Washington Avenue, Broad Street, and the Schuylkill River.
What is Rock ‘N Run? Who knows? They’re making it up as they go. One thing’s for sure – it’s going to be a lot of fun. To be truthful, they do have much planned already. The morning will be occupied with a 5K race and kid’s events. The run map can be found here. To register, visit here. That afternoon is a neighborhood party with live music and fellowship. This is the place to be if you’re into blues, jazz, New Orleans swing, or funk. Or maybe you’re into all of them! That’s okay. No harm, no foul.
Headlining the musical talent is Parliament Funkadelic’s own Bernie Worrell. Other acts include Meg Clifton (jazz), Three Car Pile Up (Americana/rock/western swing), New Pony (blues/funk/roots), Doli & the Llamas (soul, blues, classic rock), Hoppin’ John Orchestra (southern fried jazz and blues), and Rob Paine (DJ extraordinaire/reggae/funk).
Did I mention the music is free? THE MUSIC IS FREE!
Rock ‘N Run is by the neighbors and for the neighborhood. This grass roots event is all done by SWCC – organizers and volunteers live next door or down the street. Sponsor businesses are located right in the area. Want to help out? Send an e-mail to info@rocknrun.org or hellodoli@verizon.net and beg them to put you to work immediately. Chances are, they’ll comply.
Julian Abele Park is located at 22nd and Carpenter Streets right here in good old South West Center City, Philadelphia, PA. You’re probably going to hear us having fun so why not come join?
