Have you ever thought, “I’d like to build a flimsy soapbox car and sling myself down that hill?”
At the Red Bull Soapbox Race you can do just that. Do you know where “The Wall” is in Manayunk? It’s on Lyceum Avenue in Philadelphia. Be there at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 6, 2008, to test your human-powered driving machine against the field, which will consist of 40 teams of up to four members each.
This is not just about engineering skills. Winners will be awarded on speed, creativity, and showmanship. You heard right. It’s not just about getting your speed demon car from the top to the bottom of the hill in the fastest time. You also better have it stylin’ and be profilin’ yourself when you slip behind the wheel. Past years have seen toilets, tooth fairies, and spaceships launch from the start line.
Wondering exactly what a soap box car is? Wikipedia defines it as follows;
1. The car must have no motor
2. The car must have at least four wheels
3. The car must have a braking system
4. The driver must wear a helmet
5. A push is allowed at the top for extra speed
So, you see, anything else goes. That leaves plenty of room to allow the little mad scientist designer engineer guy in your brain pan to go crazy. Go crazy! The first race at the Red Bull Soapbox begins at 1:00 pm. If you need more information about this event, check their website.
Remember, this ain’t no youth soapbox derby. All experience levels are welcome to compete but compete you will. This is a national race for amateur drivers.
