“The Raiders outcoached us and they outplayed us.”
That was Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid during his post game press conference after the Eagles lost to the Raiders 13-9. Truer words have never come out of the fat man’s mouth.
I said all the obligatory things before the game about this being a trap game and how it’s tough to play a game on the opposite coast and how McNabb was due for a stinker after his near perfect performance last week, but I at least thought they could win the game. Sure, I knew in the back of my mind that they could lose, but there is no way they should have lost to an awful Raiders team.
The game started off bad for the Eagles and things never got any better. McNabb was sacked on each of the Eagles first two possessions. JaMarcus Russell threw an early INT and the Eagles couldn’t even convert that gift into any points when David Akers missed his first of two field goals. The real sign that the Eagles were in trouble was the 86-yard TD pass from Russell to TE Zach Miller where half a dozen Eagles missed the tackle. It was even the longest passing play of Russell’s career and it came courtesy of an embarrassing “duck your head and whiff dive” by 10-million-dollar man, Asante Samuel.
The Eagles even got lucky when McNabb threw an ugly INT on the play after the Raiders TD when the officials flagged the Raiders for a bogus pass interference call that negated the pick-six. McNabb was off all game, but he had lots of company.
The Eagles offensive line was atrocious. They gave up 6 sacks against the Raiders after giving up a total of 6 sacks in the first 4 games this season. The Raiders uncharacteristically blitzed all day long and the Eagles coaching staff never adjusted. They never do. There are two ways to counteract a blitz. You can either throw screen passes or you can run the football. This being the Eagles, you know they didn’t try to run the football. They had moderate success with the screen game, but only attempted 14 running plays the entire game. That’s bad even for that moron Andy Reid. He should be fired immediately and not permitted to board the team flight back to Philadelphia.
David Akers was only 3 for 5 on his FG attempts, but how can you blame a kicker for a loss when he’s the only member of your team that scores in a game? You can’t. The Eagles offense went a pathetic 2 for 16 on third down conversions against the Raiders. The same Raiders defense that was ranked 31st in the NFL in overall defense.
Hell, coming into this game the Raiders had lost three straight games by at least 20 points for the first time in franchise history and failed to reach 200 yards of offense in their past four games. This was a bad team with a 1-4 record and now they are a 2-4 team thanks to the hapless birds.
Donovan McNabb was 22-46 for 269 yards. JaMarcus Russell was 17-28 for 224 yards, with 1 TD and 2 INTs. You tell me which one was the worst statistical QB in the NFL before this game and which one was the darling of the national media? Russell did just enough for his team to win, while McNabb consistently overthrew his receivers or threw the ball into the turf at their feet. Welcome back, Donnie Mac.
With McNabb obviously not having his best day, this loss lies squarely at the feet (pun intended) of Andy Reid. How the hell do you only run the ball 14 times against a defense that was ranked 31st in the NFL going into the game? That’s inconceivable for any competent head coach. Reid is far from a competent coach. It makes it even more galling when you consider that Westbrook was running the ball effectively in his limited opportunities. Westbrook had 50 yards on his 6 meager carries. He also added 91 yards on 9 receptions. In other words, Westbrook was the only member of the Eagles offense to show up for the game. It a damn shame the Eagles offensive coaches and Reid made the flight out to the West coast.
Any other coach in the NFL would have beaten the Raiders on this day. Andy lost the game for the Eagles and he should lose his job because of it. The fans deserve better than this.
