Watching pirates is not one of the usual things to do in Philadelphia but there are always the movies, and, believe it or not, there were pirate movies BEFORE Johnny Depp sashayed into the public eye as Captain Jack Sparrow with a dead-on Keith Richards (the X-pensive Wino himself) impersonation. One of these pre-Caribbean pirate flicks will be playing at the Independence Seaport Museum Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at 8:00 pm.
Yessiree, it’s swashbuckling dancing pirates and maidens under extreme duress, all seen in the cozy amphitheater style outdoor venue on a tucked-away terrace on the Delaware River at Philadelphia’s favorite seaport hangout. Bring your friends, fake friends, people who look like pirates, a blanket, or even a picnic supper. Bonus points if you snag Keith Richards himself.
Admission is only $4 and that includes free popcorn, plus you get a free pirate eye patch. Question: Exactly what percentage of pirates actually wore an eye patch? Discuss. Four bucks? Come on, that’s about as cheap as a date gets. Take the little lady out for a night on the town.
The movie you’ll be seeing is called The Pirate, a 1948 musical starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. I know it sounds terrifying already but, believe me, it’s not that bad. Directed by Vincente Minelli with songs by Cole Porter, this “golden age” Hollywood extravaganza has gained a cult status over the years for lavish production numbers, exotic costumes and sets and, of course, two of the greatest song and dance stars ever.
And don’t forget – September 19 is National Talk Like A Pirate Day. I’m sure that won’t be a little annoying around the office. “Argh! Avast ye, matey, make me twelve copies of this here TPS report ‘afore I run ye straight through with me cutlass!”
You can visit the Independence Seaport Museum online, or in person at 211 South Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, PA.
