You know it’s true. You just need one break to make the big time. You’ve got the hair, the look, the voice, the chops, and write songs like a bat out of hell. But nobody ever really compliments you when you sing into a hairbrush in front of the bathroom mirror.
Why not try World Café Live’s weekly Open Stage and Progressive Talent Competition Monday, July 7, 2008?
Monthly Prize Package includes:
- Studio time provided by Range Records/Range Recording Studios
- Editorial feature in Origivation magazine
Annual Prize Package includes:
- Range Records/Range Recording Studios package: 4-5 song EP (dependent on instrumentation)
- 50 copies of the EP for distribution
- 250 full-color artist posters
- The Legendary Shure SM57 Unidirectional Dynamic Microphone (if it’s good enough for Sebastian Bach, it’s good enough for you!)
- One hour business-plan consultation with Marcy Wagman, CEO of Mad Dragon Records
How does this work anyway? Will the limousine pick you up at your house? Uh, sorry, no limousine involved just yet. To participate, you need to check in at World Café Live at 6:30 pm to sign up for a 2-song performance slot. You might even want to get there earlier, since slots tend to fill quickly and are offered on a first-come basis.
Performances begin at 7:30 pm and end sometime between 11:00 and midnight. Each performance is judged by a panel that includes someone from the WCL music department, the manager on duty and a sponsor representative. There is usually also one featured performer each evening (not eligible to win) doing an extended set.
Here’s where it starts to get good. Each month, the four weekly winners from the previous month will be invited back on a Sunday evening to participate in CREAM: The Best of Philly Rising, when each artist will have a chance to perform a full set. This is where the panel will select a winning act to be awarded the monthly prize package.
Now here’s where it REALLY gets good. At the end of the year, the monthly winners compete in the annual Cream of the Cream showcase on the main stage in Downstairs Live. And someone’s going to win the Annual Prize Package. Don’t worry about it. People will hear about you. We publicize the Cream awards, invite broadcast and print coverage, and solicit the participation of a media outlet as event sponsor.
