Not one, not two, but sixteen solid days of unfiltered entertainment from the Philly Fringe Festival 2008, features new works from the world’s boldest, most innovative theater and dance artists. What do they mean by unfiltered? Exactly what it says. There is no selection process. No mind-freaked judges or brain dead audiences to give a thumbs up or down.
This unique Philadelphia event allows both new and established artists to present their work on their own terms. The festival runs August 29 through September 13, 2008, and is the year’s live performance event to catch. More than 700 dance, theater, visual arts, music, and spoken-word presentations fill traditional venues, but you’re also likely to run into an artist in the midst of a work on street corners, in cars, galleries, cabarets, and restaurants. If you’re at all interested in the arts, there’s no excuse not to catch at least one – unless you’re doing twenty to life for a recent insider trading scandal.
It’s offbeat, daring and, shall I say it…on the fringe.
Opening night is always fun. Excitement builds with a tension that must be released and the very first performance of the festival is August 28, 2008, at 8:30 pm on The Adrienne Mainstage. It’s The Philly Improv Theater’s performance of The Hoppers Hit the Road. Follow the Hopper Brothers as they search for a record contract, true love, and their Ocean City music pier gig. This home-schooled sibling folk duo dazzle in this improve to script musical that proves sometimes comedians can sing.
The entire day-by-day schedule for the festival can be found here, as well as information on purchasing tickets. If you’re one of those people always asking me about things to do in Philadelphia, here are about 700!
