Another week draws to a close while a brand new one looms dead ahead, ripe with possibilities for aural satiation. That means music to you and me. Philadelphia welcomes old salts (Kool & The Gang), young whippersnappers (Rascal Flatts), and a lady who wears her faith on her sleeve (Nicole Mullens). Plus the latest entries in TWIP’s Minor Band of the Week Cool Name contest.
Kool & The Gang (Kimmel Center, 9/9/2008 @ 7:00 pm)
Nobody does the jazz/funk/soul/R&B/disco better than these Jersey boys. Since 1964, Kool & the Gang have sold over 70 million albums. That’s probably more than you could put on your bed without it collapsing. Need your memory jogged? How about “Celebrate”, “Get Down On It”, “Cherish”, or even “Jungle Boogie”. This Kimmel performance by the Kool dudes is at the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Awards, where they will be receiving the Group Award. You know you want to. Just go. Here’s their website.
Rascal Flats (Susquehanna Bank Center, 9/12/2008 @ 8:00 pm)
Eight years and five studio albums into their smash country career, these guys are still headed nowhere but up. Rascal Flatts was the top selling artist in 2006 of ANY music genre. Pretty heady stuff for these unassuming gents. Their music reflects rich harmonies, feel good grooves and they’re not afraid to get emotional for the ladies. Learn more about them at their website.
Nicole Mullens (Wachovia Center, 9/12/2008 @ 7:00 pm)
This two day gathering at the Wachovia Center is called Women of Faith, and features speakers as well as performances by Ms. Mullens and others. The theme is Reality Without Reproach. Everyone is welcome. Nobody’s perfect. Just real women sharing real stories of faith and encouragement. Churchgoer or not, everyone will feel comfortable here. Learn more about Nicole Mullens here.
Hmm. The choices are sort of weak this time around. Can’t give it to someone who uses their name. That’s kind of boring. I’m going to call it a tie between Digital Frontier and Roots of Creation but remember, it’s the music that matters!
Rachel Ries @ Tin Angel, 9/7/2008
Roots of Creation @ North Star Bar, 9/8/2008
Codename @ World Cafe Live, 9/12/2008
Digital Frontier @ M Room, 9/13/2008
Stay safe and watch for falling coconuts.
