Is that closet getting small, dark, and sort of boring? Are you ready to come out? Philly Pride Presents has just the event for you. It’s their National Coming Out Day Block Party (OutFest) and takes place Sunday, October 12, 2008, noon to 7 PM in the heart of the Gayborhood. This particular National Coming Out Day Festival has grown over the years into the largest celebration of its kind in the world. Turnout normally exceeds 20,000. It’s practically a Philadelphia institution – like cheese steaks and Ben Franklin.
In the interest of not confusing anyone out there, when we say “coming out” it means only one thing: a gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender person deciding to go public with that information.
The Festival itself will be full of the traditional, fun stuff that makes all block parties a hit. There’s the Annual Great Gayborhood Chili Cook Off, pet show contest, dance area, miniature golf, giant trampoline, t-shirts with gayborhood maps, the ever popular high heels race, and so much more. Bring the kids by the Family Zone, where it’s always safe for the little guys and gals, and they won’t get a glimpse of the infamous penis-bagel eating contest. Never fear – there are plenty of activities aimed squarely at them to keep ‘em busy for a while.
There’s also a map there in case you’re not sure exactly where the gayborhood is. However, if you show up at 12th & Walnut Streets in Philadelphia at the appointed day and time there will be no doubt in your mind you have found it.
