They were standing in a vineyard in Tuscany with visions of bringing a traditional Italian Osteria to Philadelphia dancing in their heads, complete with homemade pasta, thin crust pizza, and wood grilled meat and fish. Unlike countless people with visions of gustatory grandeur, the three owners of Osteria actually did something about their dream and now it sits there real as day at 640 North Broad Street in Philadelphia.
What does Osteria mean? I bet you thought I’d never ask. Well, I won’t but I’ll tell you any way. An Osteria is a simple (but classy in this case) Italian restaurant that serves regional cuisine and wine by the glass. It’s a comfortable place to hang out, sort of a Mediterranean take on the coffee shop concept.
Osteria is classically designed, warm and evocative in an industrial setting, with wine red-stained concrete floors, antique Berkel slicers, a vintage coffee machine, solid pine country tables, and a wall of beautifully stained wine boxes. The seasonal menu blends perfectly with the 100 bottle strong Italian wine list featuring grapes from Trentino to Sicily and all points in between.
Osteria prides itself on being one of the Philadelphia restaurants that make you feel like you’ve come home, without all the dirty dishes and listening to one another complain about the day. No matter your state of mind when you arrive, you’ll be at peace soon and they won’t even have to kill you to do it.
Osteria, a better Italian tradition than leaving the severed head of a prize racing horse in bed with your favorite Hollywood producer. Whew, that was brutal. You can visit the Osteria website to peruse the menu or just show up at 640 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA, and declare you’re ready to become officially adopted as part of their family.
