The Neighborhood to Neighborhood Street Festival is sure to be the biggest street party since Mr. Rogers went ballistic on camera after that Dr. Pepper binge and unhooked one of his sweater buttons live in front of millions. I know you’re pushing up daisies now, Fred but we miss you, buddy. Childhood wouldn’t have been the same without you. Like maybe I wouldn’t have this lingering fear of hand puppets.
Youthful unintended trauma aside, there is a stupendous family friendly street party set for Baltimore Avenue between 49th and 50th streets in Philadelphia this Monday, September 1, 2008, from noon until 7:00 pm. It’s big, it’s better than ever, and it has hot, new rising artist Chaka Khan on stage kicking out the musical jams. Wait a moment. I’m getting something in my earpiece. Her last charting single was 2007’s “Angel” which topped out at #121 on the US charts? Oh. “I Feel For You” was in 1984? Oh. Well I’m sure someone will remember it.
Kidding! Geez. Chaka Khan has a long, rich R&B recording history and recently has ventured into the Christian music genre. The girl still sings it like no other.
This year’s free street party is hosted by state Senator Anthony H. Williams and the West Philadelphia Coalition of Neighborhoods and Businesses. Some of the activities are the interactive youth station, senior’s pavilion, merchandise and food vendors, plus a serious dose of music and entertainment. Sampling a bit of Philadelphia’s rich social and cultural tapestry is not a bad way to say goodbye to summer.
