Talking smack and taking flak: Music Wrap Up

Bonus points if you see Everclear AND Celine Dion this week and don’t end up in the loony bin. Seriously, if you find yourself torn between which show to drop bucks on, please, I beg you, take a step back and analyze your life to date. Where did it all go wrong? Was it your parents fault? How can you like both of these artists? It’s not natural. Now I’m not making a recommendation you see one or the other. What I am saying is you gotta have a preference. If not, there is plenty of home grown and regional talent moving through the area next week. Pick one of them instead. Maybe your wildest dreams will come true. Whatever you do, don’t face the next seven days with no music plans!

Everclear (Lincoln Financial Field, 9/4/2008, doors open @ 6:00pm)
Singer Art Alexakis continues his strangely disturbing morph into an albino Tommy Lee. No matter. These guys are still kicking tail more than ten years down the road. Let’s see you do that, Jonas Brothers. As part of the post-Nirvana mid-1990’s musical mashup, Everclear has survived because of one thing and I can’t decide what it is. Still, I’m pretty sure their success could be traced to this mystery element. People and Eagle fans everywhere, this is a free show, so come help the dudes get ready for some football!

Celine Dion (Wachovia Center, 9/5/2008 @ 8:00pm)
The best selling female artist of all time leaves Vegas and hits the road for the first time in a decade. Quick, can you name another Celine Dion song besides that weepy ballad from Titanic that made her career? That’s what I thought. Guys, scoop up a few tickets for you and your best girl while you can. Believe me, the benefits could be…extraordinary. Let’s leave it at that. Have you noticed that on her website she looks a lot like Sarah Jessica Parker? Either that or styles her hair in a wind tunnel. Is Ms. Dion a closet SATC fan? You decide.

In lieu of doing actual research about the bands below, I’m going to once again offer my extremely uninformed pick of the week based solely on how well I like the name. This time around the winner is…da dum da dum…Windsor for the Derby! Go to the show and tell them ThisWeekInPhilly.com said they have the coolest name this week.

August Burns Red (First Unitarian Church, 8/31/2008)

Windsor for the Derby (Johnny Brendas, 9/2/2008)

Barefoot Truth (World Cafe Live, 9/3/2008)

My Morning Jacket (Festival Pier, 9/5/2008)

Ben Folds (Mann Center, 9/6/2008)

Natalie Walker (M Room, 9/6/2008)
