Last Saturday the ThisWeekInPhilly.com team headed down the Schuykill to Manayunk Brewery where the 2008 Beer Olympics was being held by Rolling Barrel . Designed to introduce regional breweries to local residents, the Olympics combined intellectual activities, with throwbacks from college frat parties, beginning with a serious beer quiz and blind taste test, and then moving on to games like beer pong and flip cup.
Teams were pitted against each other representing countries from around the globe, with several teams in costumes. Really, no frat party, errr, Beer Olympics is complete without togas right? The camaraderie was high, the boasting fun, and the contestants serious about winning. To close out the Olympics, the organizers, Corey and Matt, brought out six pack holders, tape, and scissors, and announced that the teams would have 15 minutes to build the highest freestanding tower possible. We were worried until we saw the purple kids safety scissors being passed around, these guys know what they are doing when they put an event together.
The scores were totaled, medals were handed out, and the ThisWeekInPhilly.com team had the honor of choosing the team that had the best spirit. Greece, ah, we think, took home Gold for the second year in a row, and China won the spirit medal, even if there was some dissent that they were underage .
Rolling Barrel has several upcoming events including a brewery tour of Central PA and are available for private events. Manayunk Brewery is also available for private events. Visit our Facebook page to see all the photos.
