The hills are STILL alive: Julie Andrews: The Gift of Music

Julie Andrews is coming to The Mann Center for the Performing Arts this Thursday, August 7, 2008, for the annual Party in the Park. In case you’ve been living in lead-lined, soundproofed bag for the last fifty years or so, here’s a link to some things Andrews has done on stage and screen.

We’re talking entertainment legend here, and she’s coming to Philadelphia to host and narrate a special evening of musical gifts, old and new. Helping her out are five guest vocalists who, along with Ms. Andrew’s narration, will lead the audience through a spellbinding first half of the program dedicated to the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein.

The second half of the evening is devoted to a new work – hers, in particular. Adapted from Ms. Andrews best-selling children’s book, Simeon’s Gift, co-authored with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, enjoy this musical treat that bridges the worlds of music, literature, and theater. Scored by Ian Fraser and with lyrics by John Bucchino, Simeon’s Gift will be performed by the five guest vocalists and a full symphony orchestra.

Julie Andrews serves as narrator of this story of a 15th century minstrel on a quest to discover his one true gift.

The show gets underway at 8:00 pm. Click here for ticket information. The Mann Center for Performing Arts is located at 5201 Parkside Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. Reach the Center by phone at 215.546.7900 and warble in your best imitation, “The hills are alive, with the sound of muuuusic!”
