The Philadelphia Art Alliance has been promoting the careers of emerging and established artists since 1915, which makes it the oldest multi-disciplinary arts center in the United States. Promotion takes the form of providing exhibition and performance space for visual, literary, and performing artists. Since 1926, the Art Alliance has been located in the historic Wetherill mansion on Rittenhouse Square.
Now all this is very exciting but what about today? What’s going on right now? For starters, let’s talk about an Evening With Joyce Scott Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at 7 PM.
The Philadelphia Art Alliance, in collaboration with Snyderman Gallery, welcomes Baltimore-based artist Joyce Scott for a lecture and performance event. Scott works with a combination of fiber, beadwork, glass, and ceramics. Snyderman Gallery will feature her works. The Art Alliance will feature her lecture. Can we call it something besides a lecture? Makes it sound like the audience will be berated. Let’s come up with something light and whimsical instead like a discourse. Yes. I like that MUCH better.
Somehow, I’m not sure exactly the process right now, Ms. Scott’s discourse will be held in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition of the Quilts of Gee’s Bend this fall. However they string this together, it looks to be a good and educational time. The lecture – oops - discourse will explore, through song and images, Ms. Scott’s artwork and how family, travels, performances, and the social-political issues of our times have influenced her and her work.
The Philadelphia Art Alliance is located at 251 South 18th Street, Philadelphia, PA.
