I will not go for the cheap laugh: Music Wrap Up

Will Janet ever recover from Nipplegate? Will her music ever rise to prominence again, or at least be more prominent that that freaky nipple shield she was rocking at the Super Bowl? At least we can rely on Mr. LL Cool J to ALWAYS take his shirt off but, thankfully, with nary a nip ring in sight. One thing is for sure, we here at ThisWeekInPhilly have none of the answers but we’re damn good at posing questions. So where DO you wanna go this week in music?

Janet Jackson/LL Cool J (Wachovia Center, 10/2/2008 @ 7:30 PM)
The big question here is will opening act LL Cool J be the only performer of the evening to remove a shirt? Inquiring minds want to know. Surely, no one has forgotten about Ms. Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at Super Bowl XXXVIII. CBS hasn’t, especially after paying the $550,000 fine. Oh, New England beat Carolina 32-29. Pay your money and take your chances, people. Nudie show or musical performance? There’s only one way to find out.

Kutless/Toby Mac (Wachovia Center, 10/4/2008 @ 7 PM)
Kutless brings the grunge rock with a message. Their debut album brought Creed comparisons fast and furious, not completely unfounded, but the lads have still taken the Christian music industry by storm. At this stage in rock’s lifespan, almost everybody sounds like somebody else. But can they rock? Kutless thinks they can and so does their burgeoning fan base. Check out there MySpace page here.

Below is the best of the rest and some of it is very good, without the hefty price tag that goes along with a ‘BIG’ show. I’m going to put the weekly Butterbun Award on hold for now and just say you should go see The Subdudes. These guys have been cranking out good tunes for so long they should be a national treasure by now. Hmm, maybe they are.

Of course, you can also get your Englebert Humperdinck on if you wanna.

The Subdudes (World Cafe Live, 9/29/2008)

Glas Vegas (North Star Bar, 9/30/2008)

The Bird and the Bee (World Cafe Live, 10/1/2008)

N.E.R.D. (Electric Factory, 10/2/2008)

Engelbert Humperdinck (Keswick Theatre, 10/4/2008)

Stay safe and watch for falling coconuts!
