It’s that time of year again, when parents all over the Philadelphia area pile kids into cars for the traditional trek to Camden Children’s Garden or Peddler’s Village, where the youngsters’ can make a full-sized scarecrow to take home and place outside Grandma’s kitchen window to scare the bejesus out of her when she comes down for the morning caffeine injection. That bloodcurdling shriek of terror and coffee stain on the ceiling let’s her know you really do care.
Seriously, you can make your own scarecrow in two different places Saturday, September 13, 2008, and what could be cooler than that? Sing it, people…”If I only had a brain I could while away the hours conversing with the flowers.” Or something like that.
Camden Children’s Garden calls their annual celebration of bountiful harvest the Hefty Harvest and Scary Scarecrows Family Festival. It’s an excellent way to have some of those special family moments as summer slightly gives way to fall. The harvest includes games, crafts, entertainment, while the Harvest Concession Stand features the rich flavors of cranberries and apples. And don’t forget to make your own scarecrow for a small fee. The Garden is located at 3 Riverside Drive, Camden, PA.
Your second option for a great fall festival is at the Peddler’s Village the same day from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Activities to choose from in this quaint little burg include Spiced Apple Wine sampling, a pumpkin painting workshop, live entertainment, and even pumpkin pie eating contests, or just stroll the Village to see the colorful scarecrows on display. You can read more about the Peddler’s Village here. It’s located at Routes 202 and 263, Lahaska, Buck’s County, PA.
Admit it, you REALLY want to build that scarecrow. You can even pretend it’s all for the kids but, deep down, that’s YOUR scarecrow.
