The majesty of one-hit wonderland: 3rd Annual Doo-wop Festival

Doo-wop isn’t something dirty you do when you think no one is looking. Heck no! Doo-wop is a vocal-based style of rhythm and blues music that was popular in the 1950s and 1960s. This smoothly harmonious sound emerged from the streets of northeastern cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore.

Still drawing a blank? Groups like The Drifters and The Platters led a double-handful of these vocal groups that didn’t enjoy much chart success but still made a giant imprint on music history. The Penguins are generally credited with having the first pure doo-wop record when they released “Earth Angel”. And why am I even talking about this in the first place? Did I wake up this morning and fall on my head? Maybe. What’s wrong with that – it’s the way I start every day.

The 3rd Annual Doo-wop Festival is coming to the Great Plaza Saturday, August 9, 2008, from 1 – 9 pm. New this year, admission is free to the public and a portion of the proceeds will go to support homeless Veterans and Veterans in need throughout the greater Philadelphia region. There’s no doubt about it, doo-wop is fun, and this year’s festival has on tap plenty of family friendly activities like live bands, silent auctions, and Golden Oldies playing everywhere.

For more information about this event call 215.790.4381. The Great Plaza is located at Columbus Blvd & Market Street, Philadelphia, PA.

Get your doo-woppin’ shoes on and head over to The Great Plaza at the appropriate date and time. They have all the best festivals!
