The joy and addiction of the bean: Coffee Guide to Philadelphia

No matter how you like your coffee beans roasted, brewed or served in the Philadelphia area, you’re likely to discover an establishment on the list below to go back to time and again. If your New Year’s Resolution was “Drink more coffee, baby!”, consider this Coffee Guide to Philadelphia a gift from ThisWeekInPhilly.com to you. Try ‘em. You might like ‘em.

Old City Coffee
1136 Arch Street, Reading Terminal Market, Philadelphia, PA 19107
221 Church Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Low prices and high quality distinguish this 100% Philadelphia-metro operated business. Guaranteed fresh with tiny batches roasted daily. Shop online at the link above, drop by the Church Street location for café’ style breakfast or lunch, and enjoy free wireless DSL Internet connectivity at both stores while you’re sippin’.

Anthony’s Italian Coffee House & Chocolate House
903 & 915 South 9th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147
Anthony’s is a family owned specialty food business committed to causing severe drooling when you look at the website. Coffee fiend? Chocolate addict? Both? Order your fix online. Scroll down to the bottom of their home page for printable coupons. Free shipping when you order at least $80 of product.

The Last Drop Coffee House
1300 Pine Street in Philadelphia
This truly independent coffee house has what the corporates don’t – excellent coffee, great food, and an experience that leaves you planning a return trip. Indoor and outdoor seating available, as well as an ATM and wireless Internet connection. Starbucks who?

La Columbe
130 South 19th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103
This premium coffee roasting company is the preferred coffee at the Rittenhouse Hotel. ‘Nuff said. Except for the website…cringe…someone let a designer loose with a new software toy. Too cutesy and info deficient. Come on! The web surfer in 2009 wants the information, man! We don’t wanna play pin the tail on the random circle in the animated park.

Kaffa Crossing
4423 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104
Coffee lovers, vegans and carnivores are equally welcome in this hybrid of a coffee shop and traditional Ethiopian restaurant. Eat, work, hang out with friends, or be entertained. The Philadelphia Inquirer had this to say: “A big thumbs up for this hands-on Ethiopian food, ringing with exotic homeland spices, a West Philly adventure-eating must.

There you go – enough caffeine to keep you wired until college is over or the Social Security checks give out. We suggest find one you haven’t visited yet and stick your head in there. There is life beyond Starbucks!

  1. Kind of a short list and missing some of the best

The Bean on south street, Chapterhouse on 9th and Black and Brew on passyunk are three that should be on the list. Oh and Benna’s. Oh and Gleaner’s in the Italian market! How did you miss that one?

  2. Chris, Thanks for sharing some of your favorite spots with us! We didn’t make an exhaustive list because we love hearing feedback from our visitors, and of course we haven’t been to every coffee shop in the city, so we shared our favorites :)
