A new season of performances by Philly Pops should always be on your list of things to do in Philadelphia. For thirty years, Peter Nero and and his orchestra have seemed to be immune from taking a wrong step as they mix popular classics and new favorites with a unique style and flair that keeps audiences coming back for more. The season opens Sunday, October 5, 2008, at the Kimmel Center with the perennial favorite known as Broadway Showstoppers.
If you’ve seen it before, you’re probably so busy getting tickets you’re not even listening to me any more. If you’re a Pops virgin, get out your bucket list and add this.
This season, Broadway star and sublime vocalist Anne Runolfsson joins Julia Murney and Gary Mauer on stage with Nero and the band. Her singing talents lend themselves perfectly whether in a large concert venue or intimate cabaret.
With their two-time Grammy Award-winning pianist (Nero) at the controls, Philly Pops has grown into a one-of-a-kind orchestra that authentically performs a wide variety of musical genres – classics, Big Band, Broadway, and even rock n’ roll. “Our concerts are for people who love all kinds of music,” Nero explains. “We’ve learned that audiences want an eclectic mix, a mix they can’t get anywhere else. That’s the success of our concerts – quality, variety, and a great orchestra that can play anything.”
Philly Pops shows are held at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts located at 260 South Broad Street on the Avenue of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA 19102.
