When beginning a discussion that involves Spanish food and wine, it’s a pretty sure bet you’re going to run across the word tapas, so let’s get the definition out of the way up front. Tapas are traditional appetizers that usually accompany wine or cocktails and can be very simple (like olives or cheese cubes) or more elaborate (like garlic shrimp). If you’re an information junkie, read more about tapas to your hearts delight.
What we do know is that tapas is bound to be good eats, especially if you decide to stop by Bar Ferdinand in the Liberties Walk section of Northern Liberties. In fact, use your hands to block out peripheral distractions and you can imagine this place fell down from the Spanish sky and landed in Philadelphia.
It’s that good. Visualize a taste of Spain without the airfare and lost luggage hassles. Bar Ferdinand is hip, chic, casual, and comfortable, and you just might hear Franz Ferdinand on the stereo system. What many Spanish Philadelphia restaurants take aim at, Bar Ferdinand hits dead center.
The reviews are in and they all look good. There’s something special here – truly affordable, tasty food, in a perfectly-designed room with well-priced alcohol. Check out their website for menus, or call at 215.923.1313 and shout “Olé!” just for fun.
Craig LaBan of the Philadelphia Inquirer may not have said it best but he said it very well. “…Bar Ferdinand may be closer to the true spirit of the Spanish concept – stripped of just enough rarified pretense, but magnetically good-looking and tasty enough to become the all-purpose hub of a budding nightlife crossroads.”
Bravo, Craig! Now let’s eat some tapas.
