Lock and load, kids, because today (right now) we’re all going to learn about the history of the esteemed apple. Why would we devote valuable breathing time of our life on earth to such a seemingly innocuous topic? Welp…the 2008 Apple Festival is coming to the Peddler’s Village November 1-2, 2008. This traditional fall celebration is ALL about the apple, and if you’re going to party down with this sweet fruit you need to know more about than I bet you do right now.
Come on. It’s common courtesy.
In the beginning there was a garden of paradise filled with fruit trees. The story is essentially the same whether you’re talking about the Semitic Adam, Teutonic Iduna, the Greek Hesperides, or the Celtic Avalon. Other than milk and honey, fruit is nature’s only pleasure-laden natural food. It has long been associated with love, beauty, luck, health, comfort, pleasure, wisdom, temptation, sexuality, sensuality and virility.
In 8,000 BC nomadic hunter/gatherers invent agriculture. settle down and begin to play with the apple gene pool. Previously isolated strains mix and match freely. Remains of apples are found in excavations near Jericho in the Jordan valley, dating to 6,500 BC. Chinese diplomat Feng Li becomes consumed with grafting apples and other fruit as a commercial venture in 5,000 BC. Naturalists are alarmed.
And so on and so forth…click here if you’re enamored with the story and want to read more.
But now YOU can enjoy so many activities relating to this wondrous fruit at the Festival! Try it in treats like apple butter, apple cider, apple dumplings, apple fritters, and apples dipped in caramel. Take home a bushel fresh from the orchard. Live entertainment, apple pie eating contests, and more. Admission is free and events run from 10 AM to 6 PM both days.
