You only thought the Olympics were over. Not even close, baby-face. They’re just getting started here in Philadelphia. Manayunk Brewery hosts the 2nd Annual Beer Olympics Saturday, September 13, 2008, from 11 am to 5 pm. No, sadly, this is not a celebration of raging alcoholism but rather a festive take on tasting local beers, showing off beer-related knowledge, team competition, and generally striving to kick the other teams ever-loving butt around the bar so you can go home with the gold medal. Now doesn’t that sound like fun? It should because it is.
For the low, low price of $45 per ticket purchased at Rolling Barrel Events, 22 teams, four-persons on each will battle it out for ultimate beer supremacy. The price of your ticket includes a pitcher of beer for the team, all-day access to drink specials at the bar, beer (for events), lunch, a t-shirt per person, and a chance to win medals and other fantastic prizes.
Here’s the lowdown. During registration, you’ll choose your country and then wear their colors proudly throughout the competition, because you might win the spirit award which includes a case of free beer and bragging rights. Other prizes include: gold medal and $100 gift certificate, silver medals and case of beer, bronze medals and case of beer. Notice a theme developing here? We like to give out beer by the case. By now you’re probably wondering which events you’ll be competing in. Start off with a quiz that tests your beer-related knowledge, after which you may go on an optional tour of the brewery, then it’s back to the bar for introduction of the teams and Opening Ceremonies, followed by a tough-as-nails game of quarters, and lunch.
Afternoon events include blind beer tasting, beer pong, flip cup tournament, and The Gauntlet, a competition so severe the details must remain shrouded in secrecy until the moment of the event. The Awards Ceremony conclude the official festivities at 5 pm but don’t forget about the Sugar Buzz Band hitting the stage later. Hell, you’re probably going to be buzzing yourself long before the music starts.
The Manayunk Brewery is located at 4120 Main Street, Philadelphia, PA 19127. Call 215.482.8220 for more information or to try and sneaky talk some scoop about The Gauntlet. Remember to register right away. The 2nd Annual Beer Olympics is rapidly becoming a treasured piece of Philadelphia history.
